The Power of a Word

The world has a funny way to present itself, doesn’t it? In everyday situations, there are people who are unwittingly and unknowingly quoting scripture. I can remember that, as a kid, I was told that there was life and death in the tongue. Therefore, I was told I needed to be careful with what I said.

Little did I know, it would be the verse that we would be studying this week. The verse is in Proverbs 18:21, which says:

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

- Proverbs 18:21

As human beings, we are the only creature that God made in His image. In that, we are able to create just as He did. He did this by only using His word. Our word holds weight as well, in both the physical and spiritual world.

Allow me to return to the previously stated element of childhood. Children say the silliest things, right?  Those who work with children or have their own know that children can be impulsive. A child can tell you that they wish you were dead. Their word has created that reality in which you are dead, therefore you have to tell them to take it back, for there is power in that.

Us followers of Christ are in the same reality as adults. We are able to vanquish the enemy with the words in our prayer, for Yahweh put us above Him. Our words hold weight, therefore we must be careful to only use our words to spread love and not hatred.

Associated Bible Verses: Ephesians 4:29, Matthew 15:35 - 37, Colossians 4:6, James 3:6 - 9

Think About It: When have I used my words to raise the people around me? When have I used my words to destroy the people around me? Are my words instruments of love or of hate? When I speak, do people know that I am a child of God?

Prayer: Pray this week so that the Lord makes you understand how much power you have in your word. Present your words and thoughts to the Lord, so that they may be words of love and not hate, to build and not destroy. Praise Him for the power that He has given you through the Word.
